Atletico Madrid are interested in adding Jose Callejón to their ranks, with Diego Simeone feeling it would be the ideal replacement for outbound Arda Turan.
According to the Spanish media outlet AS, Atleti are close to completing the deal for the ex-Real Madrid man, in a deal that would be their first of the summer. The club are currently well into discussions with Napoli, Callejón’s current employers.
Diego Simeone and co. are preparing for the exit of Turkish winger Arda Turan, who has admitted he is looking for a new challenge, and a change of scenery. Turan’s agent made it very clear that his client is keen on a move to the Premier League.
Turan has a €41m release clause in his contract at the Vincente Calderon, and Atletico will aim to get a fee as close to it as they can.
Last summer, Atletico had already been linked with Callejón, but both Napoli and the player himself rejected the move.
The Italian is two years in to his four-year-deal in Naples, after the 28-year-old signed for €10m in 2013.
Under Rafael Benitez, Callejón was one of Napoli’s most consistent players. In 38 Serie A appearances, he bagged himself 11 goals and three assists.
